This is an image from a test camera at Hong Kong Airport.  As you can tell the weather is very poor but ALL taxis within the range of the camera are identifiable and all number plates can be read. Images a,b and c show this in greater detail (please click image). Image c is from the farthest taxi leaving the rank approaching the bridge.

These images are from a large football club in England.  the demonstration was designed to show how facial recognition of every person in the crowd was possible using around 14 cameras. Images a, b and c show the close up detail of the seating.

    School CCTV (Network Cameras)

    a)

From a school.  These images show the benefit of high resolution. Not only are all cars visible in the car park but the students were caught slipping out for a cigarette break at the back door (as per the enlarged view a).  This image also shows that identification (the highest possible image quality) is not always necessary as the students are still recognisable (hence we have blocked their faces).

A low level petrol station demonstration. In a normal forecourt each lane would be covered by an individual camera but in this example one camera does it all.  The zoomed images show the close-up quality. Obviously the number plates have been obscured for privacy.

If you have used or extracted images from a CCTV camera before you will know the problems associated with lighting.  Unlike a human eye which can focus and adjust the iris to account for the light level in a specific area fixed CCTV cameras are required to monitor a large area usually with varying amounts of light. The example above shows the building frontage in good clarity. For any normal camera the dark areas contain only black images but using specialist IP cameras detail can still be obtained. See the enalrged images a and b (the number plate of the car in the garage has again been blocked for privacy).

This expands on the above.  The number plate is ‘blinded’ by the stop lights but the detail remains using the advanced functions of the cameras. See enlarged view a.
